I’ve got a number of upcoming conferences–all skewed toward Western North America,  it seems.

Here are the fitness conferences you can find me at in the next few months.

  • Can-Fit-Pro Vancouver, B.C. Nov 20-21, 2010 (excited about the new location in downtown Vancouver!)
  • Athletic Business Conference, San Diego, CA, December 2-4, 2010 (excited about sun and warmer weather in December)
  • ACSM Health & Fitness Summit, Anaheim, CA, April 13-16, 2011
  • Interior Fitness Conference, B.C., Late Spring 2011

And just today, I received an invitation to be a member of the BCRPA conference committee for BCFit’11! If you’re planning to attend, please let us know what kinds of sessions and presenters you’d like to see in 2011!

IDEA 2009 w Leslie McClureWell, I made it through attending both the IDEA and BCRPA conferences in the same weekend (one was in Anaheim, CA, the other in Vancouver, B.C.)!

The photo is me, on the right, at IDEA World with publicist extraordinaire Leslie McClure (she keeps me up to date on the market’s best new fitness DVDs).

On the last day of IDEA World, I rolled out of bed at 5 a.m. to catch a shuttle from the hotel in Anaheim to LAX. If my flight back to Vancouver had been delayed, I might have missed getting to the BCRPA conference site in time to present during the last session on the last day.

Everything went without a hitch, though, and I arrived at the BCRPA conference just as they were breaking down the tradeshow. At one of the booths, I scored free carrot sticks and apple slices in little bags–a perfect on-the-go snack as I headed to my session room.

Next conferences in 2009:

Can-Fit-Pro Vancouver (Nov. 7-8), where I’ll be presenting:

  • Boost Your Fitness Business with Twitter, Facebook, Blogs & More

Island Fitness Conference (Nov. 14-15) in Victoria, B.C., where I’ll be presenting:

  • The Ultimate Multi-Tasking Workout (athletic step/strength intervals)
  • Lower Body Blast (legs, butt, abs, back exercises)
  • Group Cycling: Motivating Musical Adventures

At home using computer

I think I’m crazy for doing this: I’ll be getting up unreasonably early on August 16 to catch a morning flight back from the IDEA World convention in Southern California so I can present at the BCRPA 2009 conference in Vancouver that same afternoon. How is it that these two conferences ended up on the same weekend?

At the BCRPA event, I’ll be presenting during the final session timeslot on the last day of the conference (Sunday, August 16). My session is:

  • The Inside Scoop! Achieving Success with Publicity and Fitness Articles.

I also found out that IDEA plans to film one of my sessions about using Facebook, Twitter and blogs to market a fitness business at their World Event (cool and nerve-wracking!).

If you don’t get to see that session live (it’s called Beyond a Website) at IDEA World, you can pick up a copy of it on DVD (more details to come). Here’s what I’ve got coming up at IDEA World, August 13-16.

  • Beyond a Website: Virtual Tools for Attracting Real-World Clients
  • Climbing the Fitness Leadership Ladder
  • Managing a Multi-Generational Staff (panel with Biray Alsac and Fred Hoffman)

Can-Fit-Pro Vancouver and the Island Fitness Conference (in Victoria, B.C.), both in November 09, have also invited me to present. Stay tuned for details about which sessions I’ll be doing.

Step Workshop

I’ll be presenting the following step/professional development workshop at FitCity for Women in Vancouver (8th Ave. and Hemlock) on Saturday, April 18, 2009.

To receive updates about this workshop, please subscribe by email using the widget/info-box on the top right-hand side of the screen.

Three C’s of Group X Success: Cuing, Choreography, Confidence

What makes your classes stand out?  The magic formula includes three important C’s of group X success: cuing, choreography and confidence. As a fitness instructor, you’re expected to motivate and direct your classes with skilled cuing, masterfully break down choreography of all levels and show the confidence to attract students with your own signature style. Learn to fine-tune your technical teaching skills (plus pick up new step choreography ideas!). And discover how to gain more confidence as an instructor so your personality and unique talents shine through.

When: Saturday, April 18, 2009; 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Where: FitCity for Women, Westside, located at 1401 8th Ave. (at Hemlock) in Vancouver.

Cost: $35 + gst  (If you teach at FitCity for Women, ask about the special discount for FitCity instructors.)

To Register: Contact Amanda at 604-730-9246 or avogel@activevoice.ca for complete registration details.

Pay by cheque or credit card (with PayPal).

What Is This Workshop? A two-hour interactive session that includes lecture (where you can share your ideas, too, if you like) and a movement component that includes step choreography.

The patterns you learn will be for step classes, but the concepts in this workshop apply to any type of group exercise format.

Handouts will be provided. Bring a pen to take notes. Wear your workout clothes, but come with a warm layer, as well.
